Contents pages (music magazine)

This is a standard music magazine contents page from the magazine ‘Q’. This consists of information and page numbers on what the information is on, throughout the whole magazine.
The layout is set out in a way to make it seem easy for people to find things within the magazine. The overall of the layout is that it is quite busy with lots of information on it. The sell lines are laid out beneath each other making it look quite formal but as it has a lot of information, it does look crowded. It has a lot of features with a couple of pictures to help guide people through the magazine. There are various sizes and fonts which make up this contents page making it look very professional. The colours and layout that have been used to create this contents page suits the genre of the magazine. This layout has been set in this way so it is easy to find certain features in what the target audience is looking for.
The main image is the selling point on this contents page as it includes members of ‘The Courteeners’ which is the main story in this issue of ‘Q’. Some of the members in the band are looking straight at the camera, making direct eye contact drawing the target audience in, making them want to read the article. Other members are looking in different directions making them seem mysterious.
The overall of the colour scheme of this contents page are the colours red, black and white, suiting the genre of the magazine really well. These are the same colours that have been used on the front cover as well. There are not many colours on here making it look kind of boring but it also works. I think if you were to put more colours on here then it may look over done and not look very good. The colours of the main image match the sell lines well as the picture is quite dark and the colour of the font is black. The guys in the main picture are wearing all dull colours like grey and black making the picture seem sad.
This is a different brand of a music magazine called 'NME' (new music express). This consists of a lot of information about what is inside the whole magazine and what is on each page.
The layout of this contents page is really crowded. It includes a lot of features and has a lot of sell lines with a small amount of information about what's on that page. It also has a lot of different colours and features. The layout is set out in a way to make it seem easy for people to find things within the magazine. The sell lines are set out beneath each other giving it a formal look.

The main image is of a building that is a music venue. It is celebrating three decades of gigs at this very building. The colours that have been captured in this photo suit the colour scheme to the rest of the page.
The overall colour scheme for this contents page is black red and white. It suits the genre of the whole magazine as the front cover has the same colour scheme. The colours in the main picture suit the rest of the page really well as the colours in the picture are dark and dull and are not so bright as to clash with the rest of the page.

Music magazine covers

This is a standard music magazine called ‘Kerrang’. It features rock bands like ‘You me at Six, Green Day and Bring me the Horizon’.
This music magazine has a skyline that runs across the top of the magazine which consists of shocking stories involving the band that is on the main cover. It also calls out to the reader about special attractions and more.
Below the skyline we have the masthead which the main image is covering showing that the company making the Kerrang magazines are confident knowing that the audience will know which magazine it is. The whole of the masthead is the width of the magazine, stretching from left to right in big bold letters so it stands out against the rest of the magazine. The font of the masthead appeals towards the theme of the magazine as it is Kerrang.
The layout of the magazine is set in a way to appeal towards the audience. It is quite busy with lots of detail to attract the audience. Kerrang have used lots of features to create this magazine and have used various fonts and sizes. They have also used different pictures to sell more stories of what is inside the magazine. The layout is the type of layout that suits the genre.
The barcode they have used is quite big and does get in the way of the text. It is located in the bottom right hand corner along with the price of the magazine. The font and size of the price is smaller than the rest of the fonts on the cover of the magazine. The price is small and hard to locate which tells us the price is high. If the price was low, the font would be bigger so it attracts the reader’s eye and would sell more. The sell lines are a big part of magazines. They include a range of features which are included inside the magazine.
The main image is the biggest part of the covers features as it sells the main story to the reader of the magazine. The main image is of a band called ‘Bring me the horizon’. The group are making direct eye contact with the audience drawing them towards the magazine and making them want to buy it. The subject that Kerrang used, represent their style of music so only people that like their music will only buy this magazine.
This is a standard music magazine called ‘NME’ which is short for New Musical Express. This magazine is featuring Alex Turner from the Artic Monkeys and Miles Kane from The Last Shadow Puppets. The masthead is not like normal magazines because it only stretches across half the width of the page where as other magazines have their masthead are usually the same width as the page. There are three different colours to the masthead, black and white outlines while the rest is filled with red. The colours of this masthead suit the theme of the magazine really well as the rest of the fonts and colours are the same, to make the house style consistant. The font they have chosen to use is easily readable and anyone would recognise what type of magazine it is. The main image is obscured by the main image, showing that the company is confident in knowing that their readers can recognise their brand of magazine. It will only appeal to the target audience that take a liking to this type of music (Indie music) to be able to enjoy this magazine and what ever it includes inside.
This magazine is lacking a slogan, its not competing with its competitors in attracting the target audience into buying the magazine. Also it creates a memory cue so the target audience may remember the title of the magazine. Some people may look automatically at the slogan and want to buy it that way where as others don’t.
The main image is the main selling point on the cover of the magazines; it includes the main story inside. On this cover, there are two people covering the majority of the page showing that this is the main story along with the anchorage text which is located in the middle at the bottom of the page. The anchorage text supports the main image and it gives additional information about the subjects and will draw the audience in. The two men are also making eye contact with the audience drawing them towards the magazine and if fans, to buy the magazine. The subjects appeal to the target audience in knowing that they have to be fans of the subjects on the cover to buy the magazine because people that are not fans, will not be interested in buying the magazine or the stories that are inside.
The sell lines are a range of features on the front page which include information about other different stories which are inside of the magazine. These are the small stories that are on the front cover which sell the magazine to the target audience. The sell lines have to appropriate to the genre of the magazine for it to sell just like this one has. The sell lines are placed down the left hand side of the page and are laid out under one another. There are different sized fonts on each sell line. They do not have any images to support them so some people may not know what the story is about properly.

The price is set in the bottom right hand corner in a little white box along with the barcode which is place next to it. Often, if magazines are expensive then the price can be difficult to find where as if the price was really low, like 99p, then it would be really big and advertised so more people would buy it. The barcode is small and does not get in the way of the text which is good because there is more room for information.

This is a standard, well known branded magazine, called ‘VIBE’. It involves rap music which is only for the fans of rap.
The masthead is easy to spot as it is right at the top in big bold letters. The masthead stretches across the full width of the page making it stand out against the white background. The colours that have been used suit the whole magazine really well as there are only three main colours. The colours are red, black and white. These colours have been chosen because the subject is wearing black and these are the colours that suit black the most. The colour of the masthead is black and red, mixing in with the white background making the masthead stand out for the viewers to see. The masthead is obscured by the main image showing that the company of VIBE, is confident in knowing that their target audience will notice that it is their magazine and not someone else’s that looks similar.
The main image is a medium shot taken of Eminem (who is a rapper). This is the main selling point of the magazine as it is the biggest story that is inside the magazine. The subject is looking straight at the camera making direct eye contact with the target audience drawing them towards the magazine. The subject is represented as a typical stereotype of a rapper. How he is coming across as mean, he has the tattoos and the vest top.
The sell lines are laid out in a way that makes them stand out so the target audience can see them. They are laid out down both sides of the magazine, avoiding the main image so the main image can stand out more. Some of the sell lines have bigger fonts meaning they are bigger stories inside. Some of the sell lines are different colours to make the cover look more attractive to the target audience.
There is no bar code on the front cover meaning it is on the back of the magazine. This is good because it means there is more room for more sell lines on the front cover, where as other people may get confused and think there is not barcode and will not buy it or just steal it.

Evaluation

1- How does your media product represent particular social groups?
My magazine represents the particular social group that it is targeted at. The colours are bright and colourful which stands out and also suits the theme of the magazine. The main subject that I have used for my magazine is perfect as she is a student at the college and is the same age as the target audience, this means they can connect and have a better understanding of what college is like. The masthead 'Bramcote College' adresses to the audience as the main target is teenagers and they are more than likely the ones to go to college. Also, 'Halloween Adition' may attract more teenagers as they like halloween and a sterotypical teenager likes to party.
2- What kind of media institution might distribute your media prduct and why?
If I were to choose a media company I would choose IPC Media because they are the UK's leading customer and magazine and digital publisher. IPC Media produces over 60 iconic brands which makes it the leading Media company in the UK. This company would help my magazine get more popular and help it sell and be seen by the target audience. However, there is a problem with this magazine because it doesn't have a wide range of target audience and is only specifically targeted towards college students in a specific area. This means that printing and pricing would be lower because it is a local magazine.
3- Who would the audience be for your media product?
The target audience for my magazine would be mainly college students between the ages of 16 & 18. The reason for this is because the magazine contains information to help students through college and helps them to improve thier work. There is also another target audience but not in the age range and is not directed at them but they are a target audience. This is because some people stay on at college after 18 to improve their studies and get the job or qualification they want. It could also be aimed at parents that may want to read about the college they are sending thier child to. Finally, this could be aimed at younger kids that are still in school and are looking at college magazines to see what college is like and to help decide weather they want to go there or not.
4- How did you attract/address your audience?
By using a range of factors on my magazine I helped draw the attention of my target audience. It creates the familiar look so it may encorage the audience to buy it. The fonts and sizes I have used are clear and bold on the front cover so it is easy to read. The main image is a girl the same age as the target audience which will give some understanding to the audience that the girl enjoys college and that the audience relates to her. Finally, the magazine overall is attractive and it being the 'Halloween Adition' will attract more people within the age range I have hoped for. I have also used the appropriate information to do with halloween and specific things that they may want to know about halloween and making more teenagers want to buy it.
5- What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
I have learnt various techniques and skills from this project. I have learnt how to take various photos, using a digital camera and edit them. I used an editing website called 'Pixlr' and learnt how to used various colours, fonts and layers in the photos to make it look more professional. I also learnt how to use different editing websites such as 'picmonkey' and software thats already in the schools system. I have also learnt how to contrast colours so it suits my theme of my magazine. Overall, I have learnt how to create a magazine that i think looks professional, uses codes and conventions and would look good on a magazine shelf.

Content Pages

This first contents page uses plain colours like white and blue with a splash of red and other small colours, these are all contrasting colours which gives the page a more professional look. It's quite bright which attracts the target audience. The main image takes up most of the contents page making the page easier to look at for the targeted audience and know what the main story is in the magazine.
All the articles are sectioned in a way which gives an effect to attract the attention of the target audience. This also makes it easier to find a certain story that they would like to read and it makes the contents page look a lot neater and more presentable for the target audience. The whole layout of this contents page is formal layout allowing it to look professional.
They have used various sized fonts and colous to make the writing stand out and attract the target audience.
There also smaller picture indicating there are more stories inside the magazine.

The second contents page is similar to the first. It uses simple colours such as red and black with a few other colours in the pictures, these are all contrasting colours which gives the page a more professional look. It's white backgrouund attracts the target audience because white is a bright colour and it stands out against the whole contents page allowing you to see the writing. There is no main image which may confuse the audience as they do no know what the main story is where as there are little pictures down the right hand side that tells you of other stories.
All the articles are sectioned down the left hand side and takes up most of the contents pages allowing the target audience to read the article titles properly. This also makes it easier to find a certain story that they would like to read and it makes the contents page look a lot neater and more presentable for the target audience. The whole layout of this contents page is formal layout allowing it to look professional.
They have used various sized fonts with the colous black and red for the writing to make the writing stand out against a white background and attract the target audience.

This is a magazine called 'College'.
This type of magazine is aimed at college people and people who may be going up to college within the next year, and their parents. This person has used a various amount of sizes in the fonts and has laid them out in a way to attract the audience more. They have only used 3 main colours so it doesn't make it look too colourful and messy yet it makes the cover look presentable towards the target audience. The masthead is simple and they have used a simple font which is easy to read. It is also big and bold which stands out against the rest of the magazine indicating that it is the name of the magazine. The colour of the masthead is a light blue against a dark back ground which makes it stand out so it will catch the audiences eye. On this cover page it lacks a skyline. They have used a slogan but the font is so small it is barely readable. The price is set at the bottom of the cover page along with the bar code. The price is in a small font showing that the magazine is not that cheap whereas if it were cheaper the font would be bigger to catch people's attention. The sell lines are placed down the sides and are in different font sizes for a better effect. There are a range of topics which are the bigger stories on the cover making you want to buy the magazine and read that article. The colours of the cover page have been chosen to complement to main picture. This brings me to the main picture, the main picture is of a guy, palms together by his waist smiling toward the audience. He is looking right at the audience. By doing this, he is trying to grab the audiences attention and pull the readers in. The representation of the main guy is that he is clearly a college student and is looking happy, clean and smart. This magazine also lacks Anchorage text because the sell lines are not very clear to which story the guy is related to.
This another type of a 'college' magazine. This one is called 'college lifestyle'.
This magazine is also aimed at college people and people who maybe coming up to college along with their parents. The masthead is in big bold letters and is in a bright orange colour which stands out against the white background which automatically takes your eye towards it. The size of the masthead is appropriate to the size of the cover. The masthead is also being covered with his head showing that the magazine company is confident that people know what the magazine is and it is also important towards the target audience. The choice of the title is perfect for what the magazine's target audience is. There is a small skyline running across the page but too small for me to be able for me to read. With this small skyline there may be a chance that something interesting catches the audiences eye which then sells the magazine to them. There is also a small slogan just under the title but also too small for me to read. There is no Anchorage text so the audience do not know what the main guy stood in the middle of the magazine is for and what he has to do with any of the stories in the sell lines. The sell lines are set down both sides of the magazine with interesting stories that are inside of the magazine which may catch the audiences eye making them want to buy it. The price is in a small text at the bottom of the cover indicating that it is a high price whereas if it was a lower price the text would be a lot bigger. The bar code is set at the bottom along with the price. The colour scheme is simple but affective with the main colours being orange and white. They have used a various amount fonts and sizes which gives the whole magazine a better effect towards the target audience. The main image is a guy wearing a white suit looking very sophisticated and looking like he blends in with the background. He is looking a little happy and pleased, very clean and also looking very smart. He looks very professional more like a teacher than a student. None of the stories in the sell lines are linking towards the person in the main picture. The guy is making direct eye contact with the target audience drawing the audience closer.

This is a college magazine.
This magazine is also aimed at college people and people who maybe coming up to college along with their parents. The masthead is in big bold red letters which stands out against the green background of what looks like a park or maybe on college grounds. the size of the masthead is appropriate towards the size of the magazine. The masthead is slightly covered my the girls head showing that the magazine company is confident that people know what the magazine is and it is also important towards the target audience. The choice of the title is perfect for what the magazine's target audience is. there is lack of a skyline which runs across the top of the cover. There is also a small slogan just under the title but also too small for me to read. There is no Anchorage text so the audience do not know what the main person stood in the middle of the magazine is for and what he has to do with any of the stories in the sell lines.  The sell lines are set down both sides of the magazine with interesting stories that are inside of the magazine which may catch the audiences eye making them want to buy it. The price is in a small text at the bottom of the cover indicating that it is a high price where as if it was a lower price the text would be a lot bigger. The bar code is set at the bottom along with the price. The colour scheme is simple but affective. They have used a various amount fonts and sizes which gives the whole magazine a better effect towards the target audience. The main image is a girl wearing a red t-shirt which matches the masthead making her stand out against the green background as well. She looks very happy and clean also looking smart. The girl is making direct eye contact with the target audience drawing the audience closer.

All about ME!!

All about ME!

My name is Jess Glazier. I am 16 years old and I am a student at Bramcote hills 6th form college, studying English Litrature, Media studies, Science BTEC and Photography. I have chosen these subjects because I think that it is a good range of subjects and I like to use my imagination and like to be creative.

I have made this blog to introduce myself and as my first assignment for media studies.
My pre limitary task is to create a college magazine as like a starter and my main task is to create a music magazine. These will include a cover page and also a conent page.
